Visit from the Canon!

Canon Tony Billet came to visit Class 3 today for our Beliefs and Values lesson. 

We had lots of questions for him and he told us about the important times in people's lives that are celebrated in a church. 

He showed us what he wears for church services and we talked about the meaning behind the objects and rituals at the church. 

We are now ready to put together our illustrated visitors' guide to Bressingham Church! 

Trip to Bressingham Church

This afternoon we walked down School Road to the church in Bressingham. Canon Tony Billet and two wardens welcomed us to the church and answered any questions that we had. The children had a look around the churchyard and once inside investigated and drew features of the church that they found interesting.

Canon Tony explained how the design of the pulpit helped to increase the sound of his voice so that his congregation could hear him more clearly. 

A lot of the children were interested in the lectern, which was in the shape of an eagle. This is where readings are placed during the church services.

There are some beautiful stained glass windows in the church.

There were also some lovely kneeling pads made from hand embroidered tapestry. One had a picture of our school on it! 

This wooden panel had the coat of arms of King Charles II on it.

Here is the font where children (and adults) are baptised.

The ends of the pews were carved - some were very ornate.

There were some beautiful plaques and memorials.

This organ produces music when a handle is turned at the back!

What an interesting trip - it's just a shame we couldn't spend any longer looking around!

Road Safety Magic!

Today we had a bit of a treat!

A magician called Olly Day came and talked to Classes 2 and 3 about road safety and how to cross the road with care. He showed us the dangers of crossing from between parked cars and about being careful in car parks where cars reverse.

We did a magic trick to help us remember to stop, look and listen.

Olly explained how fluorescent strips can help us to be safe in the dark.

He told us never to play on the road and to wear colours like yellow which help you to be seen in the dark. Reflectors also work really well. 

You must be safe when you cycle and wear your cycle helmet, which protects you if you fall off your bike. Olly showed us a photo of an 11 year old boy who hit his head on the road. His Dad took the photo and asked Olly to show as many children as possible to help them remember to wear a helmet. 

It's also really important to wear seat belts - and it's the law!

10 children a week are hurt on the roads in Norfolk, so be careful and look after yourself!
