Different States of Matter: Thursday June 7th 2018

Today we investigated the different forms water takes...

...solid, liquid and gas.

Ava explained how soft mixture changes into a solid cake after heat is applied during cooking. Pancake mixture changes from liquid to solid when they are fried. Eggs change colour when the white is cooked. Orange juice freezes and goes solid when it is frozen - the heat is 'taken away' in the cold conditions.

We made predictions about what would happen to coloured ice in a dish.
We then did some investigations into temperature.

Afterwards we looked at our predictions about what would happen to the ice cubes. We had decided that they would melt, which they did, and Rio explained that blue and yellow make green when they are mixed together so that is why the water around the melted blue and yellow cubes was green.

We also decided that the classroom and the people in it and the sun outside transferred heat to the ice cubes to make them melt. The ice cubes stopped being solid and became liquid.

An interesting afternoon!

Classification of Living Things

This term we have been collecting information about plants and animals with a view to classifying them into species and sub species.

We began by surveying different areas in the school grounds. Here are some photos taken by the children in the pond area:

We took our photos and specimens back to the classroom and shared our results.

Our Digestive System: November 16th

We are learning about the body and today Ms Paterson demonstrated how the digestive system works using crackers, a banana, acid (coca cola), some tights and a few pieces of kitchen equipment. It was very interesting and rather graphic - we are all now very clear about what happens when you eat and how the food travels through your body!

Once we had seen the demonstration everyone ate a cracker and estimated how long it would take the food to get to the stomach.

Not long!...

We then learned in greater detail about how the food travels through the body before it leaves as waste.

A very informative afternoon!

Barn Owls Rock and Fossil Museum: October 19th 2017

Today our museum opened to parents and carers. After a lot of preparation by Ms Paterson and the children we were able to share the work on rocks and fossils we have been doing this half term.

Mr King came to see too...

As you can see the museum was well attended - the adults were really interested in the exhibits and most had a go at the children's experiment to find out whether rocks were sedimentary or not. If acid (vinegar) is applied to a rock and it fizzes then the rock is sedimentary - the fizzing is caused by the acid reacting with the tiny animal deposits in the rock.

The children explained how we made our fossils and what the different fossils were.

We have some expert fossil collectors:

We showed rocks that had been found locally and a bit further afield, and knew whether they were sedimentary, metamorphic or igneous.

We even had two Mary Annings to help us!

What a brilliant afternoon! Have a wonderful half term holiday!
