Our last day of term: Christmas all the way!

We had a film and a great Christmas lunch followed by carols under the tree!

Class 3 Christmas Magazine

Over the last week we have been working on a Class 3 magazine. We had four groups who each worked on a page about the four classes in school under the direction of an editor.

Here is the finished article...

We have had a fantastic week so far, having done lots of Christmas activities and of course singing lots of seasonal songs at our carol service last night. We're all feeling very Christmassy!

Viking Poems

Today we completed our Viking poems and decorated them so that they looked authentic. Mr King came to see what we had done.

Class 3 Plant Blog - part 4!

 We are really impressed with our bulb because it has grown to 3cm and the flower is starting to appear from between the leaves.

We are really happy with our plant because it is now 3 cm tall and it is growing a new shoot!!!

A week ago it was 2 cm long.

Viking Bread - the Final Installment!

Today we made the last batch of Viking bread. This week we used all the usual ingredients but had blackberries instead of raspberries to put into our pasties. We talked about food hygiene and then we discussed what ingredients the Vikings would have used.

After baking the bread we wrote about the taste, texture and appearance of it. We talked a lot about yeast and what makes it work. We made the best bread so far today - it rose well and looked and smelled delicious. Everyone thought it tasted great!

Our final day of presentations about inventors

We have heard all the presentations now and were very impressed by the quality and range of the subjects. We talked about what we had learnt and how we could improve our presentations in the future.

Here are some of the things we talked about:

Nerves - everyone had them! It helps to practise.

Interesting subjects - there were very few duplications.

Clear speaking - some people were very honest and admitted that they could have spoken more clearly. Mrs Andrews gave us some tips such as holding up our notes and projecting our voices.

Reading and speaking to the audience can be very difficult - keep your finger on the words as you read.

Everyone learnt something about someone - lots of really interesting facts.

Different colours for different facts makes the leaflets attractive and helps the details to stand out.

Mrs Andrew was so impressed she is going to show all of them to Mr King. Well done!

Class 3 plant blog part 3

The hyacinth in the glass jar has grown to 2.5 cms. 

The amaryllis soil was a bit dry and we think it needs more water to help it grow. The hyacinth has plenty of water and is growing bigger. 

Homework Presentations: Inventors

This morning we listened to some of the presentations Class 3 had written for homework.

The first presentation was about Thomas Edison who invented many things including the light bulb. We saw photographs and heard quotes, and the presentation was made using a pre-prepared script - it was excellent.

The second presentation was about Sir Alexander Fleming. All the information for this presentation had been detailed in a leaflet which included Braille. We learnt all about penicillin, which Alexander Fleming discovered.

We also learnt about the Egyptians who invented early toothbrushes and toothpaste. We talked about what it would be like if we didn't have toothbrushes and heard about Mr Peabody who invented modern toothpaste. We also talked about how to look after our teeth properly.

Alexander Graham Bell was the subject of the next presentation. He was a Scot who invented the telephone, telegraph and the metal detector (amongst other things).

We also heard about the invention of the bicycle. There were lots of different types including the bone shaker, the hobby horse, the velocipede, the tricycle and the penny farthing. We heard how the bicycle became really important when people stopped using horses to get around and how mass production helped to make them very popular.

We were very impressed by the high standard and interesting content of the presentations and look forward to hearing more tomorrow!

Class 3 Advent Calendar

Here is our advent calendar. As you can see someone from class makes something every day of advent to go in the scene. Isn't it beautiful?

Our second batch of Viking bread

We started by measuring out the flour and then added our liquids - yeast, honey and warm water.

Here is the yeast mixture. We learnt that yeast needs warm water and some sort of sugar to activate it.

Here is our bread mixture after we had all had a go at kneading it. This puts air into the bread and should make it nice and light.

We left the dough to rise after break time. Then we kneaded it agin and shaped it ready for proving. Here is our bread rising on the window ledge in our classroom.

We loved the finished bread and enjoyed tasting it!
